The Australian APEC Study Centre Trade and Environment Program

A new series or "round" of negotiations on international trade was launched in the World Trade Organisation in Doha in November 2001. The outcome of the negotiations decided upon by members of the WTO will provide new opportunities for trade liberalisation and economic growth. However, it also raises the prospect of new restrictions to trade on environmental grounds. Some environmentalists claim these are necessary for protecting the environment. Others assert that they could constrain the opportunities for growth and development through the WTO.

The APEC Study Centre has developed a program to contribute to the debate on the role of the WTO in promoting trade and in dealing with the environment.
