This project will determine patterns of variation in the frequency of diploid, triploid and tetraploid trees which have some potential for planting at high elevation topography in Vietnam.

Project Title: Occurrence and structure of polyploidy in natural populations of Acacia dealbata in Tasmania.
In collaboration with University of Tasmania's scientists Dr Nghiem Quynh Chi will determine patterns of variation in the frequency of diploid, triploid and tetraploid trees, she will then look for clonal development. Collaborators will complete the observations at seed maturity if this is beyond the scope of the visit The species that Dr Nghiem Quynh Chi will study in this project, Acacia dealbata, has some potential for planting at high elevation topography in Vietnam.
Reasons for applying for fellowship:
This is an opportunity for Chi to reinforce her links with the Australian breeding specialists who guided her PhD and allowed her to gain new insights into polyploid systems in the Acacia. The output from this activity will assist her in planning her ongoing work on tropical species in Vietnam for at least next 3 years.
Since 2000, Chi has worked at the Institute of Forest Tree Improvement and Biotechnology (IFTIB) of Vietnam Academy of Forest Science (VAFS) in Hanoi, first as a researcher, and now as Head of Plant Cell Technology Division. She has extensive experience in forestry research, focusing on the topics of controlled pollination, vegetative propagation and tree improvement research for the main planting species in Vietnam including Acacia, Eucalyptus, Melaleuca and Pinus. She was awarded a John Allbright Fellowship to undertake PhD studies at the University of Tasmania (UTas) and has acted as a Project Scientist and Project Leader in many inter-regional projects. She is the principal author of three publications in high-profile international journals and the secondary author of another two. Additionally she has presented in conferences in Malaysia, Australia, Viet Nam and China.
