Project Outline:

The efficient use of energy is one of the primordial actions to live more sustainable, urgent measure to be taken due to the imminent climate change. Currently many governments are taking actions towards a more efficient use of energy in their countries. The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the countries from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) (Mexico and Australia being on the list) have reaffirmed that governmental policies are a powerful tool in increasing energy efficiency and achieving greener growth. This project's goal is the construction of a decision maker model for the efficient use of energy depending on the available resource.

In this project we consider the energy consumption by sectors in a country and suggest the best use of their available main resources to satisfy its consumption in a scenario with a more efficient use of energy, less CO2 emissions, more economically viable and promoting the export of energy. This is achieved with a Decision Bayesian network. The Bayesian Network relates the conditional probability of some factors influencing the energy consumption in the country and by means of utility functions we provide a preference for scenarios in which the use of the available resource is better according to our requirements.

Applied for fellowship:

"This fellowship provided me a great opportunity to enrich my professional growth by learning and applying an artificial intelligence technique to energy. Likewise, the research topic we considered is of great interest and very important for Australia, Mexico and the rest of the world. Last but not least, this project opens a collaboration between researchers of both countries to address this topic".

Past Achievements:

Dr. Monica Borunda achieved her Ph.D. in theoretical physics at the International School for Advanced Studies in Trieste, Italy. Her research interests went from high energy physics to renewable energy. Currently she is interesting in the best exploitation of renewable energy towards a more sustainable world by means of novel techniques such as artificial intelligence.

Dr. Monica Borunda has won several fellowships for postdocs and research stays in Canada, USA, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Germany, Qatar and Japan. She has also participated in international conferences and has lectured graduate courses in maths, physics and energy.

Dr. Monica Borunda has twenty three peer-reviewed publications in the fields of theoretical physics, energy and artificial intelligence. She is currently a researcher in energy in Mexico and belongs to the National System of Researchers in her country.
