About me:

I am the founder and project lead of an agribusiness and climate-smart enterprise based in New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea. My work focuses on building inclusive, export-oriented value chains that combine sustainable agriculture, women’s economic empowerment, and climate action. I have led the establishment of our Cocoa Agroforestry Start-Up Project, which integrates smallholder cocoa farming with organic processing and international market access. My background includes project development, community engagement, and working with development partners to translate local production into viable commercial enterprises.

Our Cocoa Agroforestry Project was established as our start-up venture in New Ireland Province with support from UNDP PNG. The project was designed as a climate-smart agroforestry model, combining cocoa cultivation with shade trees and food crops to restore soils, increase resilience, and improve farmer incomes—particularly for women and youth.

What makes this project unique is that it was conceived not only as a farming initiative, but as a full value-chain enterprise. From the beginning, our goal was to produce certified organic cocoa, process it locally into premium cocoa products and chocolate, and export to Australia and other open international markets in line with APEC market requirements for quality, traceability, and sustainability.

The project attracted strong interest during the first field mission by the UNDP and Monitoring & Evaluation teams. Their visit documented how smallholder farmers were transitioning from low-value raw bean sales to a structured agroforestry system linked to processing and export markets. The mission captured the project as a success story because it demonstrated three outcomes at once: improved farm productivity, stronger community livelihoods, and a viable pathway to international trade through organic cocoa products manufactured on-site.

Today, the Cocoa Agroforestry Project stands as proof of concept for our business model: using sustainable agriculture as a foundation for export-ready products, while ensuring that local communities remain core beneficiaries of the value created.

Through the APEC Women’s Business Activator program, I aim to strengthen my enterprise’s readiness for regional and international markets. Specifically, I hope to:

  1. Improve my understanding of APEC trade and regulatory requirements for food and agricultural exports, including standards, certification, and market access pathways.

  2. Build stronger business systems in areas such as branding, compliance, finance, and investor readiness.

  3. Connect with regional mentors, buyers, and partners who can support the scale-up of our organic cocoa and chocolate products into Australia and other APEC markets.

  4. Position our business as a model women-led, climate-smart agribusiness that aligns with APEC priorities on inclusive growth, sustainability, and MSME development.

My long-term expectation is that participation in this program will accelerate our transition from a successful pilot project into a competitive export enterprise, while demonstrating how women-led agribusinesses from Papua New Guinea can participate effectively in regional value chains.

About me:

I started Buna Trek and Tours in 2014 with a team of porters and guides in Oro, Northern Province. It wasn't a full-time business venture because I was working full time, after COVID came and went, I decided to give it my 100% and see how it went, in 2022 I decided to officially register the business as a company and focus on its growth.

It has always been my dream to work with communities, and my business being in the tourism sector has made it possible to do so. Through tourism I have seen families raise their standard of living with money earned as product owners and service providers, I take tourists into villages and reach communities will lack of easy excess to earning money. The tourist money goes a long way when it gets right down to the village and grass roots level. This means a lot to me. I not only love my traditions and culture in Papua New Guinea, sharing it with others is rewarding in itself.

By joining this program, I hope to get more skills that will build my confidence, make new connections, learn best practice from other participants and to push me to do better for my team, my village and community.
