Dr Marcela Henriquez - Henriquez

This research project will study the role that gene variations play in determining sphingolipid metabolic pathways as risk factors for neurodevelopmental disorders.

Economy: Chile

Partnering Australian Institution: Australian National University

Project Title: Functional Genomic Variation in Sphingolipid Metabolic Pathways and risk for AOHO and other neurodevelopmental disorders

Project Outline:

The proposed research project will study the role of allelic variants in the SLs pathway as risk modulators for neurodevelopmental disorders, especially ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder).

Reasons for applying for fellowship:

"This fellowship strengthens an early collaboration with the ANU Genomics and Predictive Medicine Group, focused on exploring the role of bioactive lipids as potential risk factors for neurodevelopmental disorders. This is a forefront field of neuro-genetics and, based on our previous findings, we expect high impact results from this alliance"

Past Achievements:

Marcela has 8 years of postdoctoral experience working in clinical and basic research, oriented to the search of genetic and molecular risk markers for neurodevelopmental disorders (ND). Marcela's work has focused on the research of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the teaching/mentoring of pre-graduate and post-graduate students at the School of Medicine at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Santiago. She is an established researcher and has written

extensively in peer reviewed articles and book chapters.

Marcela has received multiple awards for her work in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine including the 2015 Award in the Emerging Leaders in Nutrition Science Competition, Energy & Macronutrient Metabolism RIS, ASN, Boston, USA 2015. She has participated in international conferences in the USA, Scotland, Chile, Turkey and Germany. For her academic work, Marcela has received the Padre Alberto Hurtado Award for Excellent Undergraduate Students; 1996- 2003 and was nominated for the Honor Award of the Chilean Physician College for the best graduate Medical Doctor in Chile, promotion in 2003.
